Behavior & Training
Ann Culhane
Every pet owner has been there — your dog won’t stop barking at the mailman, or your cat decides your favorite chair is the new scratching post. It can feel frustrating, but here’s the good news: pets usually “act out” for a reason, and once you understand the why, it’s much easier to find a solution.
1. Excess Energy and Boredom
A lot of unwanted behaviors, like chewing, scratching, or barking, come from pets having too much bottled-up energy. Dogs may need longer walks or more playtime, while cats often benefit from interactive toys and climbing spaces.
2. Separation Anxiety
Pets love being with their humans, and some struggle when left alone. Dogs might howl, chew, or pace; cats might become extra clingy or vocal. Gradual training, comfort toys, or calming routines can help ease their anxiety.
3. Lack of Training or Socialization
Sometimes, pets just don’t know what’s expected of them. A puppy who jumps on guests or a kitten who swats at hands isn’t being “bad” — they simply need guidance. Consistent, positive reinforcement training works wonders.
4. Health-Related Issues
Sudden changes in behavior can be a sign something’s wrong physically. A cat avoiding the litter box might have a urinary tract infection, and a dog refusing to play might be in pain. When in doubt, a vet checkup is the safest bet.
5. Attention-Seeking Habits
Pets are smart. If they learn that barking, meowing, or scratching gets your attention (even negative attention), they’ll keep doing it. The trick is to reward calm, good behavior and redirect unwanted habits.
At the end of the day, your pet isn’t trying to make life difficult — they’re just communicating the only way they know how. With patience, consistency, and sometimes a little professional help, most behavioral issues can be managed. The bonus? Solving these challenges often makes your bond with your furry friend even stronger.
